Expert Arto Bryggare analyzes the medal candidates for the women’s pole vault final.
Four medal favorites and one very successful champion.
That’s the starting point for the women’s pole vault World Cup final, which starts on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
– Of these five women, two are clearly above the others. Wilma Murron doing is so wild that he wins with a score of 495–500, reports Iltalehti’s athletics expert Arto Bryggare.
The expert said a year ago in advance that the Finn will take the brightest of the European Championships in Munich.
According to the expert, Murro’s position now is even better than in Bavaria 2022.
– Physics decides when the wind doesn’t help. It seems that there is no crosswind, but indoor conditions. That means 490 cents or more is required to win. The medal comes for 480–485 cents.
Iltalehti analyzes the medal candidates athlete by athlete.
Wilma Murto
Pasi Liesimaa
Homeland: Finland
Age: 25
Best of the season: 480
Record: 485 (2022)
Achievements on outdoor tracks: European Championship gold 2002, one Diamond League competition win
– Wilma is number one in terms of physics. He uses the hardest fins. The technology is also good, although not the best, says Bryggare.
According to the expert, Murto is the fastest woman in the final.
– The energy that is produced in the fence makes a big difference. It defines what kind of stick you can use. The stiffer the pole and the higher the grip, the higher you can go over.
Murto is in a new situation in his career. Never before has he been a medal favorite in adult competitions.
– The pressure is quite strong. It is not always easy to tolerate. I hope he takes the situation in stride – as he seems to.
Katie Moon
PASI LEISMA
Homeland: United States
Age: 32
Best of the season: 490
Record: 495 (2021)
Track record: Olympic gold 2021, World Championship gold 2022, seven Diamond League competition victories
– A quintessential American with strong pride in his country. A very tough competitor whose technique is more reliable than Murrola’s, says Bryggare.
In Bryggare’s opinion, a Yankee is not physically similar to a Finn.
– Running is slower than Wilma’s. It’s not bad, but a different level. She uses shorter and possibly slightly softer fins than Wilma.
Nina Kennedy
PASI LEISMA
Homeland: Australia
Age: 26
Best of the season: 477
Record: 482 (2021)
Track record: WC bronze medal 2022, Diamond League final victory 2022, three Diamond League competition wins
– Strong runner and fierce competitor, Bryggare commented.
The Australians are often at their best from the beginning of the season, but Kennedy’s performance level is increasing towards the prestigious competitions, as is the European way.
– The capacity to jump from really high heights is exhausted. I think only two athletes, Murro and Moon, have the capacity to jump 490+.
Tina Sutej
PASI LEISMA
Homeland: Slovenia
Age: 34
Best of the season: 482
Record: 482
Track record: EC bronze medal 2022, one Diamond League competition win
– Technically the best. A huge number of jumps in the background and a standardized technique, Bryggare states.
The Slovenian is clearly the most bird-like and physically tame of the top players.
– Pace running is not the class it should be when jumping in zero coils. Those who do not run optimally will not get the help offered by the wind in Budapest. Now let’s measure who is physically the best.
Sandy Morris
Pasi Liesimaa
Homeland: United States
Age: 31
Best of the season: 471
Record: 500 (2016)
Track record: Olympic silver 2016, World Championship silver 2017, 2019 and 2022, Diamond League final victory 2016, eleven Diamond League competition victories
– Good to have fun, enjoys the situation and the encouragement of the audience. You can jump, but the bangs are not enough when you jump from heights to 490 centimeters, the expert informs.
The 2023 season of the long-time champion has been the slowest of his professional career.
– He was healthier in previous years. The run is not as strong as in previous seasons. I bet he was pleased when he made it to the finals.
