It is a mystery series in which a ghost ship is found in the middle of the sea
The creators of ‘Dark’, one of Netflix’s most successful series, have just released their new project. ‘1899′which arrived on the platform on November 17, is a mystery and horror series about a ghost ship found in the middle of the sea what has been inspired by real events.
1899 will tell the story of how a ship of European migrants heads towards the North American coasts. The crew’s goal is to escape the hardships of the old continent and find a better life on the other side of the Atlantic. However, during the sea voyage, the ship runs into another, apparently empty, in the middle of the sea. This will lead to a series of strange and paranormal events.
Early in production, series creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar told Deadline that some of their great influences were the current migration crisisthe social gap in Europe and the Brexit. “The whole European perspective was very important to us, not just in terms of the story, but also in the way we were going to produce it,” Friese said.
“We feel that, with the last years of Europe in declinewe wanted to give a counterpoint to Brexit and rising nationalism in different countries, to return to that idea of Europe and Europeans working and creating together,” explained the German creators.
Therefore, both assured that the characters would have different places of origin and each one would speak a different language. “Being true to cultures and languages was very important, we didn’t want to have characters from different countries but all speak English,” explains Friese. “We wanted to explore the heart of Europe, where everyone comes from one place and speaks a different language, and that language defines a lot of your culture and behavior.”
In this regard it should be noted that One of the leading actors in the series is the Spanish Miguel Bernardeu (‘Elite‘), who gives life to Angel. Along with him, 1899 has a cast of Polish, German, French or Chinese interpreters. Apart from the crises and migratory movements, the series is also inspired by different legends of ghost ships such as the Mary Celeste, a drifting brig that appeared in 1872 and from which it was never known what had happened to her crew.
