Most motorists and motorcyclists cart into the tunnel at 70 kilometers per hour, without even looking up for a second. But there are some observant Zoetermeer residents who do! We received an email from such an attentive driver who wonders what the white sign above the Eurotunnel says. Of course we want to know that too, so indebuurt is looking into it!

The white sign is hidden between two road sections on a concrete edge of the same color. So the sign is not very noticeable. Pedestrians crossing the Europaweg can see and read the sign.
Europatunnel or tunnel trough
First a few facts: in the vernacular, people from Zoetermeer mainly refer to the Europatunnel as the tunnel trough. It has been there since 1982, so the tunnel is over forty years old. It is an underground road that runs through the center of Zoetermeer, between the Stadshart and the Woonhart. The tunnel trough is regularly closed in whole or in part due to maintenance work.
The text on the sign
As a pedestrian, you can look out over the tunnel from the middle section while crossing the Europaweg. You not only see the traffic passing below you, but also see the sign hanging. We read the following text:
This tunnel tunnel was officially opened on 27 May 1982 by the alderman for public works, Mrs LM de Rooij-Huizer, as the largest self-manufactured work of art.

This means that we drive alone through a true work of art with our cars, vans and motorcycles. On May 27, 1982, the tunnel was opened in a festive manner. The white board with the text was then concealed by means of a small curtain that was pulled open. Fun fact: the Centrum West bus station was opened on the same day.
