Today promises to be a wonderful sports Sunday, from early in the morning until just before midnight. What can you look forward to and what can we follow?
Australian Grand Prix
We kicked off with the Australian GP, which unfortunately did not go well for Max Verstappen. Read the report here!
10:00 am: Rotterdam Marathon
At 10:00 am the starting gun of the NN Marathon Rotterdam will sound on the Schiedamsedijk. There is room for massive participation in the 41st edition. About 34,000 runners are expected to participate, of which 18,000 in the full marathon of 42.195 kilometers. This year’s marathon is dominated by the duel between the running friends and Somali natives ‘Abdi and Abdi’. The Dutch record holder Abdi Nageeye (2.06.17) and the Belgian holder of the European record Bashir Abdi (2.03.36 last year in Rotterdam) gained world fame last summer with Olympic silver and bronze.
10.20 am: Amstel Gold Race
This year’s Amstel Gold Race is a beautiful and prestigious interlude between the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. Mathieu van der Poel (2019) and Wout van Aert (2021) are the last two winners. Van der Poel is present, but Van Aert focuses on Roubaix. His Jumbo colleagues Christophe Laporte, Tiesj Benoot and Tom Dumoulin are present. The team presentation will start at 8.50 am at the Vrijthof in Maastricht, where the starting gun will sound at 10.20 am. The finish is around 4.45 pm in Valkenburg.
12.15 pm to 9.40 pm: Eredivisie
Five matches in the Eredivisie on this Sunday, starting at 12.15 pm with the Derby van het Hoge Noorden between Heerenveen and FC Groningen. Then at 2.30 pm PSV – RKC and Vitesse – Cambuur are on the program. Feyenoord will then play the away match at Heracles and at 8 p.m. PEC Zwolle and AZ will close round 29 in the Eredivisie.
5.30pm: Manchester City-Liverpool
As in 2019, Manchester City and Liverpool are engaged in a blood-curdling Premier League title battle. Three years ago City narrowly won (98 to 97 points) and now both top clubs can again come close to that impressive number of points. Pep Guardiola’s team will start on Sunday evening with the home advantage and a point ahead of the squatter, in which City can give Virgil van Dijk and his teammates a big blow. City and Liverpool will face each other again next week, then in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley.
6.30 pm: Denouement in Jupiler Pro League
Today is the last round of the competition in Belgium. After this weekend, all clubs have to hand in half of their hard-earned points and the play-offs start. The Brussels stunt-promoter Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (74 points), defending champion Club Brugge (69 points) and Royal Antwerp FC (63 points) will compete for the national title in the coming weeks, but the fourth title candidate is not yet known. AA Gent (59 points) has to beat OH Leuven to beat Anderlecht (61 points, out at Kortrijk). In the play-offs, all clubs will play six more matches; three times out and three times at home.
9 pm: Levante – FC Barcelona
Xavi has now been a coach of FC Barcelona for 27 matches. The successor to Ronald Koeman started quite volatile, but is now fourteen matches unbeaten. With that, Barca has moved up from ninth to second place in La Liga. Levante is battling relegation, but Valencia’s second club has proved a difficult opponent for Barcelona in recent years with results such as 5-4 (2018), 3-1 (2019) and 3-3 (2021). Can Barcelona push the fear gegner deeper into trouble and keep Sevilla and Atlético Madrid under themselves?
