This is how you use the ramp on the reopened Mandela Bridge

The Nelson Mandela Bridge reopened on Thursday evening, January 26, for walkers, cyclists, train and tram passengers, people on a mobility scooter, and so on. An emergency bridge has been placed in the middle, which we have to cross via a ramp. You can read how that works here.

The Mandela Bridge looks a bit battered with a gaping hole in the middle. There you drive or walk in the open air without the protective blue-yellow hood above your head.

Wooden ramp

The middle bridge section has been replaced by a temporary emergency bridge. Only it has a different size, so there is a height difference between the old and the new part. This has been solved by means of a wooden ramp.

From the Driemanspolder entrance, walkers can walk along the side of the ramp and climb the stairs to reach the middle part. Then take the stairs down and you have crossed the A12. Cyclists do take the wooden ramp to get to the temporary bridge section. There will be no changes to the route for tram passengers.

From Rokkeveen it takes a little longer before you get to the ramp. For train travelers nothing changes from this side. Walkers also walk next to the ramp and via the stairs in the direction of Driemanspolder. Cyclists do take the wooden ramp.

Good workout

Cyclists have to pedal extra hard to take the ramp. Wheelchair pushers and people with a pram also need a run-up. A good workout for the legs!

New coating layer

The municipality advises cyclists to get off at the ramp because of slipperiness. The track is made of wood and will receive a coating layer. Due to the cold weather, the layer could not be applied yet. This will happen soon so that the track is a bit rougher and safer to drive on.

Draughty hole

The temporary bridge section over the A12 is open and draughty. Walls have been placed on the sides so that you do not have a view of the highway from the bridge. The station area will be completely overhauled in the coming years. This will include a new bus platform, station building and a crossing for cyclists. The Mandela Bridge will also be tackled.
