On the Spa-Francorchamps the engines and heavy machines roar even in winter. However, there is no race, because the Formula 1 track is in the middle of renovation and construction machinery is circling the course. The photos show first impressions of the modernization measures on the traditional Belgian course. The ultimate goal is to increase security.
Not only does automobile racing play a role here, but also the attempt to homologate the track for motorcycle races. This requires changes in some areas to ensure the safety of the drivers. That is why heavy artillery rolls over the asphalt strip of the route in the Ardennes in winter.
The renovation work began on November 15th and is expected to cost around 80 million euros. The investment is intended to bind Formula 1 and other major racing series to the track in the long term. The most popular events include the Belgian Grand Prix, the 24h of Spa and the endurance world championship (WEC). In addition, a 24-hour race for motorcycles is to be held in Spa-Francorchamps on June 22, 2022.
In order to obtain the license from the World Motorcycle Federation (FIM), several run-off zones must be adapted to the needs of two-wheeled sport. Some run-off zones are enlarged, in other places asphalt areas give way to a gravel bed. In addition, something is being done for the fans: new grandstands are to offer spectators new experiences on the approximately seven-kilometer circuit.
Instead, a typical postcard image was destroyed: In the combination of Eau Rouge and Raidillon, the famous little mountain hut that overlooked one of the most legendary corners in motorsport history was torn down. The little house had to give way to the modernization of the route.
La Source, the first hairpin bend, and Eau Rouge are hardly recognizable at the moment. Both asphalt run-off zones will be replaced with a gravel bed. On the side of the long-distance pit lane – i.e. on the back straight – the grandstands were demolished. New seating and VIP areas are to be created here.
The outside of the Bruxelles curve has also been redesigned. As in La Source, the asphalt discharge zone is replaced by a gravel bed. Blanchimont gets a larger run-off zone and also a gravel bed. The service road is drawn behind the stack of tires. The renovation is in full swing and should be completed before the start of the 2022 racing season.
