This is how referee Danny Makkelie experienced the resuscitation during PSV-Ajax

The match between PSV and Ajax was briefly stopped last Sunday due to resuscitation in the stands. ESPN now shows how referee Danny Makkelie came to his decision.

The referees’ communication can be heard in a short video. Fourth man Erwin Blanc is the first to notice that resuscitation is taking place in the stands. “Just for your sake: CPR is being performed in the stands,” he tells the referee and his assistants.

At that moment, the crowd also gives the signal to stop the match and referee Danny Makkelie decides to follow that advice.

“Out of respect, we shut it down.”

In the background you hear the fourth man continuing to talk to probably the trainers. “We are shutting it down out of respect.”

Meanwhile, Makkelie speaks with PSV player Joey Veerman. The midfielder reacts shocked when he hears what was going on. “No, I thought a cup had been thrown. But how nice of the audience. Our doctor is a trauma surgeon. I could already see him going that way.”

“That is an extremely nice signal from the supporters.”

Makkelie himself also reacts to the camera after the match and summarizes the situation. “At first I didn’t realize what was happening in the stands. But at a certain point you do see the audience waving. That is an extremely nice signal from the supporters. They recognized that it was something serious. Then you stop immediately because it has a significant impact on the people around it.

Jason Sol, the man who was resuscitated was then escorted from the stadium. It later turned out that he had suffered an epileptic seizure. He was released from the hospital a day later.
