This is how often Zoetermeer homes have been broken into this year

The number of domestic burglaries has risen for the first time in years in the Netherlands. But does that also apply to Zoetermeer or are the Zoetermeer houses well secured?

In the period from January to September, burglars struck a total of 17,300 times nationwide. That is an increase of more than seven percent, because in the same period last year there were 16,100 burglaries. This is evident from an analysis by the ANP based on police figures.

Home burglaries in Zoetermeer

What about the home burglaries in Zoetermeer? The figures show that there have been fewer burglaries this year than in the same period last year. In total, there were 78 burglaries. A year ago, that number was 82 burglaries. That is a decrease of 5 percent.

Related to corona measures

According to the police, there is ‘a direct connection’ with the corona measures. “In 2021, the number of domestic burglaries was exceptionally low. When the measures disappeared at the beginning of 2022, the number of burglaries also increased again. We are now slightly lower than in pre-corona year 2019 around the same time. But it is still expected to involve more than 25,000 residential burglaries this year,” said Sybren van der Velden, national project leader for residential burglary at the police. This rule therefore does not apply to the number of burglaries in Zoetermeer: the number of burglaries this year has remained virtually the same as last year.

Our city scores lower in the number of burglaries than most major cities in our region. View the map below and see that the municipalities of The Hague, Rijswijk, Wassenaar, Bodegraven, Rotterdam and Vlaardingen have a higher number of burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants. An example: In Rijswijk 14.4 burglaries per 10,000 inhabitants were measured, in Zoetermeer it concerns 6.2 burglaries.

Much lower

Despite the national increase, the number of burglaries is still much lower than in previous years. Five years ago, for example, more than twice as many burglaries were registered than is the case today.
