With the cold of the past few days, winter seems to have really started in the province. For some this is the starting signal for winter fun, others would rather see the cold go than come. Throughout North Holland, everyone dealt with the cold in their own way. NH collected the best images.
It was still too dangerous on the lakes, canals and ditches today, but at some ice clubs it was really possible to skate on natural ice this afternoon. In Sint-Pancras for example, there was already a lot of skating there today. “We have an average thickness of five to six centimeters and that is sufficient,” said ice master Coen Koning.
Flooded playground
In Purmerend and Middelie, residents were also eager to get started today. “Isn’t this fantastic?” said an enthusiastic ice master Wim Derks.
The children in IJmuiden also played on the ice today. Not on an ice rink but ‘just’ in the playground. It was completely flooded with water and changed due to the frostin a real ice playground.
Things were a bit more extreme today in the Zaanse Kalverpolder. With his kite in hand and irons under his feet, the Zaanse Sam glided through the Kalverpolder today. He also did not shy away from some stunt work.
Looking for a way in the cold
Not everyone knows how to deal with the low temperatures. In the Hoenderdaell estate, a zoo, the exotic animals in particular were shocked by the cold. So there is work to be done for the caregivers.“Many animals literally have to be taken out of their outdoor enclosure and brought inside,” says zookeeper Daphne Pels.
Who has skating in his blood is Sjaak Bakker from the ice skating club in Wervershoof. Today he watched with satisfaction as young residents of Wervershoof found their way across the ice. According to Bakker, the ice is still too thin for adult skaters. “Maybe that can be done tomorrow.”
