This is how it is now with Joel and dog Moaca without a snout: ‘We are often recognized on the street’

In June we wrote about the Zoetermeerse Joel and dog Moaca. A striking appearance because the Romanian adoption dog is missing half of her face. Several media picked up the subject and published their special story. How are Joel and Moaca doing after all that attention?

The number of views on TikTok grew by the millions and Joel and Moaca are increasingly recognized on the streets. “Put her to sleep” or “She could be in a horror movie” are some of the nasty reactions Joel got. “It touched me and I reacted to it. But now I don’t anymore. Most people stick up for us.”

Celebrity on the Street

Joel Wareman (23) took to the public eye to explain that Moaca is a happy dog and just functions like all other dogs. In addition, she really liked the growing fame. “I regularly go to The Hague where we are often recognized on the street. Recently I went out in Arnhem with friends. There I was approached by strangers even without Moaca. But also in Groningen and Rotterdam. ‘You are a good person’ and ‘how nice that you adopted her’ they said.”

Joel even gets requests from fans via Instagram who want to meet her. “Often there are children at or primary schools. I recently met up with two girls from the neighborhood who were eager to see Moaca. I had keychains made with her photo that I hand out. I even send them to fans in America. They just walk there with a picture of Moaca in their pocket. Sometimes I say to her: do you know how famous you are?”

She can function without a snout

In addition to requests, Joel still regularly gets questions about whether Moaca is doing well. In her videos on TikTok and Instagram, she shows how the dog eats and drinks and how she plays with a ball. This is to explain that she can function without a muzzle. “People ask if she isn’t in pain and if she can bark. She can do this and I want to show that online as much as possible.” The criticism of the appearance of her dog, but also of Joel herself, is not tender. “Followers say I look like a boy. I know that we both stand out because of our looks and also that I’m not your average person. Neither does Moaca, so we are a perfect match.”

House, tree animal

A nice woman, whom Joel had a crush on for some time, suddenly started following her on TikTok. “I started following her back and that’s how we got in touch. We agreed and now we have been in a relationship for some time. Fortunately, she thinks Moaca is fantastic. Soon I will move to my first house together with Moaca. My parents are still babysitting.” After a period of depression, Joel sees a bright future for her. “I’ve been very dark but I’m really happy now. House, tree, animal. Everything is positive.”
