The draw of the Champions League round of 16 showed a German duel. But what’s next? And what about BVB?
In the round of 16, Bavaria initially receives the reigning German champion in the first leg in Munich, the decision is made in Leverkusen a week later.
With the draw on Friday, not only the round of 16 is determined, but also the complete way of all teams until the final.
For the winner of the German duel between Bavaria and Leverkusen, either the Italian champion Inter Milan, who was also in the final two years ago, or the Feyenoord favorite fright, who had defeated Bayern 3-0 in the league and Milan from the Champions League threw.
In a possible semi -final with German participation, Dortmund, Lille, Benfica or Barcelona would wait. Favorite among these four teams is undoubtedly FC Barcelona with coach Hansi Flick, who was the second best team in the Champions League. Only Liverpool scored more points in the league.
This also means: There cannot be a German finale, as all three Bundesliga teams fight for the final on the same side of the tournament tree.
BVB has to deal with the OSC Lille in the round of 16. The French club is currently fifth in Ligue 1, is one of the biggest surprises in the Champions League. So Lille hit Real Madrid 1-0 at home and defeated ATlético Madrid 3-1 away. Favorite fright Feyenoord was handled 6-1 by the French.
In a quarter-finals with BVB participation there could be a reunion with Hansi Flick. The former national coach was already a guest in Signal Iduna Park with FC Barcelona in mid -December. At that time, Flicks won eleven with 3-2 at BVB. But to achieve the top eight, Barça has to pass Benfica.
Should Dortmund prevail against Lille and the winner from Barcelona against Benfica, there would be a duel with the winner from the group in which Bavaria and Leverkusen are on the road.
On the other side of the tournament tree, two real top games are also waiting. On the one hand, in the round of 16 of the Liverpool FC on Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand there is a city derby between Real and Atlético in Madrid.
The winner of the Spanish duel in the quarter -finals either calls for PSV Eindhoven or FC Arsenal, but who has to do without national players Kai Havertz due to a lengthy injury.
A surprise team is waiting for the winner of the duel PSG against Liverpool. Club Bruges and Aston Villa make up a quarter -finalists among themselves.
