This is how Brabant experienced Carnival Sunday: rolling, running and shining

The third day of Carnival was again a beautiful and colorful day in our province. Carnival revelers everywhere joined in the festivities. Below is a selection of all events in Brabant.

Major power outage
Oss and surrounding villages have been hit by a major power outage. After the parade, around a quarter to six, it suddenly became dark in the center of the city and the neighborhoods beyond. This left more than 27,000 households without power, as well as the many cafes where carnival was being celebrated. By half past eight most of the problems had been resolved.

They did have enough light in Knollenrijk (Berghem), even though it is located in the municipality of Oss. The illuminated parade passed through the streets there on Sunday evening. The floats are up to 25 meters long, up to 8 meters high and are illuminated by thousands of lights.

Helleveegje got out of bed
On Sunday afternoon at exactly eleven past three, the time had come in Hellevegersland (Hedikhuizen): Helleveegje was taken out of her bed and placed on a pedestal. A tradition that was restored in 2020. On Tuesday evening at eleven past nine she will be put back to bed and then she can sleep again for a year, according to our reporter who is celebrating the festival of festivities on Sunday in the hamlet that, according to the inhabitants, is no more than a major intersection.

Gas up and keep running in Verkeskop
The traditional Knakworst races provided quite a bit of hilarity on Sunday in Verkenskop (Beugen). Under the motto ‘gasp up and keep running’, the riders jumped on the back of their age stallion and then tried to reach the finish line first.

Hannelore Struijs and Thomas Wustman participated on behalf of Brabants Buske. They went into battle with the Prince and Youth Prince of Verkenskop. The latter were defeated within sight of the harbor by the tandem of Omroep Brabant, as announced by the speaker Hannelore and Thomas.

No beer or a greasy snack for a while, but kicking a ball around
The traditional chowder competition was on the program at VV Steenbergen on Sunday. According to Levi van der Ree of the organizing supporters’ association, this is a great way to get some exercise between drinking beer and eating a delicious meal. This in a weekend without football at amateur level due to carnival.

The match reportedly ended 3-1. For whom, it is not clear to most on and along the field, but that is not the point. After all, fun was paramount. The latter was evident from the fact that at one point the game was played with twenty against twenty. Not in football uniform, but in carnival costume. Quite difficult to kick a ball dressed as an oil sheik, for example. Fortunately, there was chowder and a sausage sandwich for everyone afterwards.

In Leemkuul the barrels bounce over the cobblestones
Throw back a drink and then roll a keg. It sounds so simple, but it is not what it seems, as it turned out on Sunday in Leemkuul (Oeffelt) where the National FustenRolling Championships were held in relay form. Such a keg wants to go in all directions, except the good one. The cobblestones on part of the course also created an additional handicap.

Roeptoetgat reporter Noël did very well as a newcomer. However, the final turned out to be a bit too far for him and the golden team: they ended up in the semi-finals. However, the fun was no less and Noël promised his teammates to practice at home. That bodes well for next year!

A historical moment in Erpelrooiersland
The Council of Eleven of Erpelrooiersland (Wagenberg) was put in the spotlight on Sunday morning during the traditional Carnival Mass. The entire council is saying goodbye this year. There were nice words for the company and of course also awards.

The men, the council is now still a complete men’s company, started together twelve years ago and have always said they wanted to complete the eleven years: together. Due to corona, it has become twelve years, of which eleven are active years. Time to say goodbye, is how Michel Wicherink expressed his feeling and that of his colleagues. Prince Fleurke called the church service very special afterwards. “They did it for 11 years with a lot of passion and dedication. We are going to miss them,” she said.
