This is how bad Zoetermeer scores on toilet friendliness

You are shopping in the Stadshart and suddenly feel that you need to go to the toilet. But is that possible in Zoetermeer? The Stomach Liver Intestine Foundation, in collaboration with the HogeNood app, investigated how toilet-friendly our city is.

This is how Zoetermeer scores

You can find more than 8,000 toilets in the Netherlands via the HogeNood app. This can be a public toilet, but also a toilet in a catering facility or town hall. Can you easily find a toilet in Zoetermeer? Well, Zoetermeer scores super bad with 489 points and is therefore in 156th place in the Netherlands. Zoetermeer is in 27th place for our province.

If we look at recent years, the municipality of Zoetermeer has only fallen further in the ranking. In 2020 we were still in place 43 and in 2021 in place 153 in the Netherlands. Zoetermeer residents, but also shopkeepers and catering entrepreneurs, have been complaining for years that there are not enough toilet facilities in the center of our city.

This is how the score is established

The Stomach Liver Intestine Foundation uses various indicators to calculate a city’s score.

  • Number of inhabitants per public toilet (maximum 300 points).
  • Accessibility: urinals get less points than toilets;
    (wheelchair) accessible toilets receive the most points (maximum 300
    points).
  • The spread across the municipality (maximum 150 points).
  • The number of public toilets compared to the number of open toilets (such as a toilet in a catering establishment). (maximum 100 points).
  • The policy of the municipality regarding accessible toilets (maximum 100 points).

All 344 municipalities in the Netherlands have been included in the survey of toilet friendliness.

Top five

Okay, so our city is in 156th place in the Netherlands when it comes to toilet friendliness, with a score of 4.9, but what does the top five look like? As follows:

  1. Veere with an 8.2
  2. Utrecht with a 7.7
  3. Schiermonnikoog with a 7.4
  4. Alkmaar with a 7.3
  5. Rotterdam with a 7.3

At the very bottom of the list are Rozendaal in Gelderland, Voerendaal in Limburg, Laarbeek in Brabant and Blaricum in North Holland. These municipalities score the worst, each with a score of 0.0. Maashorst in Brabant gets a score of 0.5. “The last five municipalities on the list have been doing poorly for years,” said the Maag Lever Darm Foundation.
