Ratings, reviews and detailed information about more than 10 million films and series worldwide – that’s what IMDb has to offer. TECHBOOK presents the large Internet film database.
“It only has 5.8 points on IMDb” – reason enough for many people to reconsider their choice of film. But probably not everyone knows who or what is actually behind the sender. TECHBOOK presents the US internet film database.
What is IMDb?
IMDb is an acronym for Iinternet Movie Database. With more than 10 million international film and television productions, the data collection of the website is enormous. The basic version of the database is available to everyone free of charge. IMDb Pro users who choose to pay membership fees monthly or annually can also access additional information about films. A corresponding subscription is therefore particularly worthwhile for those who belong to the industry.
IMDb evolved from rec.arts.movies, a discussion platform for film enthusiasts founded in the 1980s. As a hobby, private users had started to create lists with data on films and actors. In 1996 the project was transformed into an official company, in the meantime even with the list leaders as (part-time) owners. The number of users increased rapidly and the company received numerous purchase offers until it was sold to Amazon in 1998.

Movie Ratings
A majority of private people look at IMDb to see how a movie or series of interest is rated. This is given a score between 1 and 10. IMDb speaks of a “weighted average rating”. Because although every registered user can vote, votes – depending on “weight” and influence, as it is on the IMDb website means – taken into account to varying degrees. In order to assess this, the editors check every submission and try as best as possible to prevent misuse.

Facts about film and television productions
Furthermore, the database provides a lot of information about films and series. Which actors were involved, where and when was it filmed – even non-paying website visitors can read about it. Paying subscribers can also find out how much money films have made, get agent contact information and much more.
streaming service
The most unknown IMDb function in this country is that of the streaming service. The offer also includes IMDb TV – a streaming service from Amazon launched in the USA in 2019. It has also been available in Germany since April 2022, but here under the name Amazon Freevee. Incidentally, the “free” stems from an essential feature of the service: it is “for free”, i.e. completely free of charge.
