Is the Seestrasse in Zeuthen near Berlin threatened with clear-cutting? A total of 261 trees are to be felled to completely renovate the road.

The Zeuthener Seestrasse: idyllic, green and surrounded by magnificent trees. The Brandenburg State Road Agency (LS) is now planning a fundamental renovation of the avenue on behalf of the municipality of Zeuthen. Problem: 261 trees, some of which are 100 years old, are to be felled for this purpose.

According to the Nature Conservation Association of Germany (NABU), the layout of the road, green strip and sidewalk would be almost identical after the renovation – just without trees. “The typical avenue image, with the crown of trees crossing the street, would no longer exist in the future,” says Matthias Rackwitz, chairman of NABU Dahmeland eV

According to the state company, we are currently still in the planning approval process: “We can provide more detailed information about the construction project when the planning approval decision is available.” The NABU criticizes: “There has been no change to the plan so far.”

According to Rackwitz, NABU actually supports the road renovation. But: The trees must be preserved. “Brandenburg state politics is committed to protecting its avenues, but when it comes down to it, they fail,” said Rackwitz.
