The jury’s evaluation was relatively unequivocal: While Ikke Hipgold almost always received one point for his song “Lied mitgutes Text”, Will Church took the lead with “Hold On” – closely followed by Anica Russo and René Miller .

Anica Russo – “Once Upon A Dream”

ESC preliminary decision 2023: “Our song for Liverpool” was chosen

50 percent of the points were awarded by a five-person expert jury from Switzerland, the Netherlands, Finland, Spain, Lithuania, the Ukraine, Austria and Great Britain. They awarded a total of 368 points. The other 50 percent of the points came from the German audience, who were able to vote before the show. The same percentage of points were awarded by phone call, SMS and online voting.

In the morning, the band Frida Gold had to cancel their participation at short notice. The singer Alina Süggeler dropped out due to illness, so the performance could not take place. All votes that had previously been received for Frida Gold in online voting were therefore invalid.

In 2022 Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest. Due to the Ukraine war, however, the show cannot take place in the winning country as usual. It was therefore decided to hold the ESC 2023 in Liverpool.
