SC Magdeburg surprisingly dominated the German dream finals in the Champions League against the Foxes Berlin and put on Europe’s crown.
With a gala on the throne: SC Magdeburg won the Champions League for the third time after 2002 and 2023. In the final of the final Four in Cologne, the SCM defeated the new German handball master Fuchse Berlin with 32:26 (16:12) on Sunday (June 15, 2025).
Tight start …
After a bumpy start to the Champions League season and only fourth in the group phase, the Magdeburg broke up with enormous consistency and have not given a point in the league since April. With this self -confidence, the Bördeländer triumphed in the final. After a racy start with many mistakes on both sides, the one-one artists shone in the initial phase. Again and again Gisli Kristjansson and Nils Lichtlein used the gaps in the competitive game.
SCM impressed
After 15 minutes, the SCM set off for the first time with two goals after a 3-0 run. At this deficit, the foxes bit their teeth. The newly baked German champion had a hard time and couldn’t get any closer. On the contrary: as a defense specialist Antonio Serradilla Cuenca den Füchsen Stahl, the SCM set out for the first time with three goals (11: 8/21.).
The Berliners seemed annoyed in phases because they did not bring their notorious speed game to the record. In addition to a dream defensive, this was also due to SCM goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez, who shone with numerous parades and brought the fox to despair. Hernandez only allowed twelve goals in the first half. The Berlin district runners did not score a goal. In contrast, the cool and ripped-off Magdeburger met relatively and went into the break with a well-deserved four-goal pad.
Celebrate Sergey Hernandez and Magnus Saugstrup.
Foxes attack engine stuttered
Magdeburg’s Hexer Hernandez (18 parades at the end) returned from the cabin and pulled the tooth out of the cabin and pulled the tooth on the outside. World handball player Mathias Gidsel now tore the game on himself, only put on 13:16 and later scored at 14:17. When Magdeburg’s Serradilla Cuenca flew off the parquet with a red card (34th), the momentum seemed to be with the foxes.
The Berliners looked more aggressive at least for a short time, but did not use the templates of the SCM – Lukas Mertens several times. Instead of shortening to two goals and playing out the attack calmly, Lasse Andersson tried violently and failed. The Berliners just didn’t ignite and Magdeburg stayed hot like frit fat.
Gisli Kristjansson stood out of a strong Magdeburg team.
SCM with a gala
20 minutes before the end, the Wiegert-Sieben led five goals for the first time. When Mertens met in the empty goal (23: 17/43.) After a Gidel error, a preliminary decision seemed, but the capitals came up again with an intermediate sprint.
This was not more than a short glimmer of hope because the Magdeburgers just wanted the victory that day, sank the rebound and the Berliners failed in the decisive moments. Top star Gidsel also fluttered the nerves. He missed the chance twice to shorten or three goals eight minutes before the end. On the side of the Magdeburger, Gisli Kristjansson, who chased mopsfidel over the parquet after a miracle healing in the final phase, stood out with eight goals. In the final phase, the SCM played into a frenzy and swept the foxes out of the hall.
Third German German Final game
The duel between master and vice champion was the third German Champions League final in history. The last time in the 2013/14 season with SG Flensburg-Handewitt and THW Kiel (30:28) two German clubs faced each other in the final of the final four in Cologne.
