Third death in 18 months within top Russian oil group Lukoil | Abroad

After Maganov’s death in early September 2022, Russian police had launched an investigation, with suicide as the most likely cause, local media reported. The man who was in hospital for heart problems was struggling with depression, it was said. According to Lukoil, he died after a serious illness.

Maganov’s death was certainly not the first in the circles of Russia’s top businessmen and oligarchs since Moscow started a war in Ukraine early last year. For example, former manager Alexander Subbotin also died at Lukoil in May last year. Here it was said that during an occult treatment for a hangover or alcoholism, he lost his life in the basement of a shaman’s house.

In March last year, Lukoil was the first major Russian company to call for a quick end to the war in Ukraine. “We call for a rapid end to the armed conflict and unreservedly support a solution through a negotiated process and diplomatic means,” the Lukoil board said in a press release. Lukoil stated, among other things, that he was “concerned about the tragic events in Ukraine”.
