Third Whitsun Day, also known as Pentecost3, is unknown to many, but a concept in the West Frisian village of Venhuizen. This day has been a tradition since 1960 and there is horse racing in the village, at right angles to the fair. In the morning, the somewhat brackish Venhuizers secure their spot along the 275-metre short track, this year for the first time on the Twijver.
Venhuizers who live on the Twijver are first class and make it cozy in front of the door. Friends and family are welcome and drinks are served from 8:00 am. From half past one the horses are used and half past two the trotting starts. “It’s just tradition, cozy with friends and family” says a resident of Venhuizen. “One gives a drink, at the other you can eat a bite, have a nice drink with each other.”
Additional day off
Children from Venhuizen have an extra day off today, even if you attend a school in a nearby village, as a resident of Venhuizen you have the opportunity today to go to the fair or harness racing.
