Thieves devastate Ukrainian day care center in Berlin-Wilmersdorf

With her project, Alexandra Melendez (32) wanted to give Ukrainian children a piece of normality and founded the “Nano’s Kidsclub” – now her helper’s heart is bleeding. The day care center for refugee families was robbed on Sunday.

“It’s all devastated. We are emotionally shocked,” said Melendez, who quit her job to support Ukrainian families.

The perpetrators broke down the doors to the facility on Bundesallee on Sunday afternoon and stole donations, game consoles and laptops. They even ransacked the toy cupboards in search of stolen goods – and that in the middle of the day.

“An employee was still in the premises until midday. At 4:30 p.m., the news came that everything had been demolished,” says the founder. While the restaurant next door was in full swing, the unknown perpetrators ransacked the day-care center.

The day-care center “Nano’s Kidsclub” opened last February and since then has looked after up to 40 children who fled the war from Ukraine. While the children play, their mothers attend German courses at the facility.

“We want to create a safe haven for the people and are grateful for any information,” says Melendez. She is hoping for support in the form of donations to repair the doors so that operations can quickly resume as usual.
