Thief of safe with photos of deceased Wesley gets 14 months in prison

Mohamed E, the thief who stole a safe in June containing personal belongings of a deceased son, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison. In addition, he must pay the Engels family compensation of more than 4,100 euros.

At the beginning of June, Ferd Engels and his wife were burglarized in their home in Beek en Donk. A safe full of personal belongings belonging to their deceased son Wesley was stolen. The photos show, among other things, how Wesley is lying in state. It also concerns images of the funeral.

His parents had never seen the photos themselves. “We put them in the safe thinking we would look at them when we felt the time was right,” Ferd said shortly after the burglary.

Safe found in the Goorloop
Partly thanks to clear camera images and many tips, the perpetrator was caught shortly afterwards. The safe was found again a few weeks later in the Goorloop stream near the Eindhovens Kanaal in Lierop.

The 25-year-old perpetrator’s sentence can be reduced by six months if he manages to adhere to a number of conditions, including undergoing treatment.

The judge in Den Bosch found sufficient evidence for another burglary that he committed in Helmond in March of this year. This is where he stole jewelry. The perpetrator was already detained in the detention center in Grave.
