“They tried to beat us with 80 men”

Wild scenes ensued after an eventful regional league game between Rot Weiss Ahlen and VfB Homberg. The guests are said to have been attacked by several fans.

It was a memorable away game at Rot Weiss Ahlen for VfB Homberg, who were in acute danger of relegation. After being 2-0 down early on, the Duisburg club hit back twice just before the break. In the second half it was 3:2 in the third minute of added time before the hosts equalized two minutes later with an own goal from Nico Lübke.

The mood was already charged during the game, but after the final whistle the Ahlen fans overdid it. On the way to the guest cabin, the Homberg players had to pass a beer stand where some supporters of the hosts were standing. VfB head coach Sunay Acar reported that there was aggression there.

“They tried to beat us with 80 men,” he told “RevierSport“. The opponent is also partly to blame for the situation. Already at the end of the game, Ahlen brought “poisonous atmosphere from the outside”. “The Ahlen assistant coach, who received the red card, is also to blame. That’s not how you behave. That’s just how you bring in that negative vibe,” Acar pointed out.

Rot Weiss Ahlen apologizes to VfB Homberg

Homberg goalkeeping coach Markus auf der Heiden and offensive player Yassine Bouchama are said to have suffered “a few scratches”. “The five or six stewards had absolutely nothing under control. They were simply overwhelmed by the aggressive Ahlen fans. I find it shameful that our safety wasn’t guaranteed at that moment,” the 43-year-old continued to complain.

The fact that Dirk Neuhaus, first chairman of the Ahlener, came into the guests’ dressing room after the incident and apologized was a “great gesture”, according to Acar.

Neuhaus himself has opposite “RevierSport” nevertheless expressed doubts about the representation of the Homberg coach. “There were not 80 people. Maybe three or four men stepped out of line and insulted a Homberger player,” he said, but added: “But of course, three or four are too many. We apologize for this on behalf of Rot Weiss Ahlen.”
