The Prosecutor’s Office of Peru decided this Wednesday to open a preliminary investigation against the president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, for the alleged commission of the crime of influence peddling and summoned him to testify on August 4.
The Public Ministry reported, in a message posted on Twitter, that the decision was made by the Prosecutor of the Nation, Patricia Benavides, who decided to “repeal the provision that suspended” the start of these proceedings.

That preliminary investigation had been suspended last January by Zoraida Ávalos, then attorney general, on the grounds that the president could not be investigated while exercising his mandatea position that Castillo’s defense also wields.
After Benavides’ decision, the Prosecutor’s Office will investigate the president for the alleged meetings he held with businessmen identified as interest managers and for alleged irregularities in the promotion of high-ranking military officers.
