They cheered the Ajax Women to victory

About 20,000 spectators saw the Ajax Women win a Champions League match for the second time on Thursday evening. Fans from all over the country came to the Arena. Who are these Ajax players and why do they come?

It is a big day for Sammy (10), Yoana (9), Liz (7) and Jesse (7), all four players of football club OSV from Amsterdam. The girls have just become champions and will soon be allowed onto the field as mascots, accompanied by the players. “I feel very happy that we can be here,” says Yoana. The fact that Ajax is doing so well only makes it even more fun. They are a bit nervous. Liz is especially concerned. “I don’t know if I’ll get my shoes on in time.”

Marco (26) and his father Tim (61) traveled from Ursem to the Arena today because Marco had won tickets at the supporters’ association. “They asked the score of the previous match and I saw that too.”

For Tim it is very simple: “If you are a fan of a club, then you also support the women’s team.” A while ago, Linda Bakker from Ursem still played for Ajax, but now that she has left, Leuchter is the new favorite. “She just has a nose for the goal.”

Zinairu (42), Emre (18) and Chop (40) came to the Arena from Wageningen today with their trainers Gijs (44) and Gert Jan (61). The football players play in the only AZC team in the Netherlands, in the fifth division.

Gert Jan took them to the arena today, because defender Isa Kardinaal is his niece. “And for the women of Ajax, getting tickets is also a lot easier.” Emre is wearing a scarf from his favorite club Galatasary, but today his heart goes out to Ajax.

When Sara (20) saw the women entering the field during the previous match in the Arena, she had to think about her own time on the football field. Always the only girl, and a comment about her ponytail every game.

The fact that Ajax is doing so well now makes her proud. They come from Leiden, but have always been Ajax players. “Because if you watch football, you automatically end up at Ajax.” Because Sara is in the disabled spot, she can take someone with her. “Best place in the stadium, right behind the goal”.

Normally Ben (29) always cycles to the Arena in a procession, but now he was almost alone. As a proud owner of a season ticket, tonight is the first time he will see Spitse, Leuchter and the others. “I said to my friends, shouldn’t we go see the women sometime?”

He hopes that he can do his part, because ‘we have to stand behind the club together’. He does know one thing, Van Eijk has been his favorite since that moment with Rafael van der Vaart at Studio Voetbal. “It’s good that men with big mouths are put in their place.”
