They can celebrate in Volendam, trainer Wim Jonk

For FC Volendam, the season started with a 2-2 draw at FC Eindhoven and the competition ended almost nine months later. The goal – promotion to the Eredivisie – has been achieved, but trainer Wim Jonk would have liked to offer the large audience a better football performance.

Given the ratio of chances and the field game, FC Volendam was not allowed to complain about the result. A windfall was the 2-2 that Daryl van Mieghem scored in injury time, so that the team ended the last game in the first division for the time being.

After the final whistle, thousands of supporters took to the field to celebrate the promotion to the Eredivisie two weeks ago. “People are ready for a party and they are good at that,” said Jonk, who is looking forward to the celebration next Sunday.

For a number of players, the game against FC Eindhoven was the last in the FC Volendam shirt. The veterans Boy Deul and Kevin Visser (AFC) are leaving, as are reserve keeper Dion Vlak (Spakenburg) and Alex Plat. De Volendammer got some more playing time in recent weeks, but a new contract was not in it for him either. And so the book FC Volendam is closed: “Yes, quite with mixed feelings.”

Sunday is the official ceremony of FC Volendam. At 3 p.m. the players and staff will enter the harbor, after which they will go to the stadium at De Heen-en-Weer 10. The festivities can be seen live on TV, site, app and social channels from 2.45 pm.
