It’s booming, knocking, rustling from the ground – and only at night: For a good six weeks, spooky noises have been keeping people in the Meteora district of the Greek port city of Thessaloniki from sleeping.
After many complaints and numerous conjectures, the mystery is now apparently before the solution. According to the city’s waterworks, the noise has to do with the water pressure in the system, the daily reported “Kathimerini” on Tuesday.
The pressure has now been regulated, but the phenomenon will be monitored further to ensure that people can sleep peacefully again in the future.
Because many did not sleep, but were very worried. Did the pounding announce an earthquake in the region? No, geologists and seismologists unanimously affirmed people’s concern. Conspiracy theories then began to sprout on social media – the assumptions went as far as extraterrestrials working underground.
But now the spook could be over. The residents hope so, because now they are also bothered by the increasing scary tourism of fellow citizens from other parts of the city, who come especially to listen to the spooky noises.
