These were the Google search trends for 2022

Ukraine war dominates German searches

One of the most formative events of 2022 was the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, which has been ongoing since February 24, 2022. This was also reflected in the Google search: in the categories “general search terms” and “headlines” the search for Ukraine took first place, Vladimir Putin took first place in the categories personalities and politicians, in the latter the Ukrainian President Zelensky placed fifth. The most searched questions also show how much the Ukraine war preoccupies people: In addition to questions like “Why is Russia attacking Ukraine?” there are also questions such as “What is SWIFT?” or “How many soldiers does Germany have?” among the top searches in Germany.

Corona only a little interesting

Compared to previous years, it is striking that the coronavirus only appears marginally in the search trends. Although “Corona” was searched for a little more often in direct comparison to “Ukraine” last year, since the trends always highlight the outliers and the search interest in the disease is increasingly reduced, the trends for 2022 only contain searches such as ” How long is the quarantine?”, “How long are you considered vaccinated?” or “What does 2G-Plus mean?”, whereby the absolute search interest for a Google Trends query can also be classified as rather low. Nevertheless, there was one disease that can be found in the general search trends among the top 10 queries: The monkeypox virus occupied people in May 2022 in particular, after which at least the search interests flattened out again.

Significant differences in global trends

The trends can not only be called up for Germany, Google creates the overview for some countries and also offers the option of viewing global trends. Here some interesting differences to the German search trends can be identified: In the general search trends worldwide, the word puzzle led the trends, followed by “India vs England”, which means a cricket duel from July 2022. The search for Ukraine only ranks third here. But there are also similarities: in the “Farewells” category, the search for Queen Elizabeth II is the leader both in Germany and worldwide, and the “News” category was also led by the search for Ukraine.
