Yle’s newsreader and editor Matti Rönkä, 64, made his last news broadcast today, February 28, on the Half Nine News. Rönkä recently announced in an interview with Yle that he will retire.

Röngä’s last shipment was already advertised Cultural cocktail Live in the broadcast, which ended just before the half past nine news.

Technical problems were encountered right at the beginning of the broadcast. At the beginning, we listed what will be covered in the evening’s news broadcast. For the last clip, Röngä’s voice was not heard.

However, Röngä’s voice returned to the screen after he entered the pictures. As usual, the anchor wished the viewers a good evening. In his last broadcast, Rönkä reported on, among other things, the Estonian Armed Forces, To Alexei Navalny about upcoming funerals, electricity price spikes in Finland and Israeli raids.

At the end of the broadcast, Rönkä spoke his last words as a news anchor.

– Such good people. This is my last news broadcast. Humble thanks that I have been allowed to do this work – and freely so that no oppressive power guards or prevents it. It is not obvious at all. Today, on Kalevala day, we speak in our own language. This must be cherished, this must be taken care of together. Goodbye.

After those words, the broadcast showed clips from Röngä’s career while playing in the background Frank Sinatra’s a classic hit My Way.

Rönkä told Yle on Monday, February 26, that the knee surgery before Christmas and the long sick leave gave a foretaste of missing work. On the same day, he told Iltalehti that he was happy to retire after decades of work.

– I think I have fully served. I have worked continuously for 42 years for a salary and went to work almost every day with a curious and happy mind, Rönkä said.

Rönkä revealed that his retirement plans include at least continuing his work as a writer. Röngä’s next book will be published in the fall.

Rönkä started as Yle’s news anchor from the beginning of the 2000s, and before that he worked as news manager of Yle’s TV news since 1990. Previously, he has also worked at MTV, Helsingin Sanomat, Lehtkuva, Radio Ykköse and Insinööriuutinis.
