The organization of the Tour of Spain has announced which teams will start on August 19 in Utrecht. The Spanish formations Euskaltel-Euskadi, Equipo Kern Pharma and Burgos-BH received a wildcard, completing the field of 23 teams.

The eighteen teams from the WorldTour, including Jumbo-Visma and Team DSM from the Netherlands, are automatically admitted to all major races. The procontinental teams Alpecin-Fenix ​​(of Mathieu van der Poel) and Arkéa-Samsic are allowed to participate in the Vuelta based on their performances from last year.

Actually, the organization of the Vuelta should only have handed out two wildcards, but the UCI approved a request to admit an extra team. As a result, the peloton that will start in the Netherlands consists of 23 teams of 8 riders: 184 riders in total.

The three-week stage race starts with a team time trial over more than 23 kilometers through Utrecht. The second and third stage also pass through the Netherlands, from Den Bosch to Utrecht and a stage with start and finish in Breda. After that, the participants already have a rest day, on which they travel to Spain for the continuation of the round. The finish is on September 11 in Madrid.

The Slovenian Primoz Roglic of Jumbo-Visma has won the Vuelta in the past three years.
