Fake accounts and bots are currently making life difficult for Instagram users. The spam accounts vie for attention with comments and likes. All they want is for unknowing people to click on the link to supposedly hot pictures and then rip them off. Other bots deliberately spread fake news, send spam messages, or collect data. However, it is also possible that fake accounts are deliberately bought in order to artificially boost the number of likes in posts and to suggest the popularity of a profile.
Whatever the reason, celebrity accounts are teeming with fake accounts. The celebrity with the most allegedly fake followers is Katy Perry, a survey says. Of her 187 million followers, about 29% are said to be non-real people. CasinoGuardian’s Investigation examined the profiles of actors, musicians and TV stars for the number of fakes and created a ranking. Second and third place are taken by Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian with about 28.9% bots each. Her sister Kim is in twelfth place with 2.5% fewer fake followers. Also in the top 10 are Chris Brown, Miley Cyrus, Gigi Hadid, and Justin Timberlake, among others.
The assessment
For the evaluation, several profiles of different celebrities and influencers were examined to determine the 20 accounts with the highest proportion of fake followers. For this, the survey resorted to one Application of Modash return. This makes it possible to examine popular Instagram accounts for their interaction, popular content and fake followers. The software examines various characteristics of the profiles to find out whether it is a real user or not. These can be recognized, for example, by missing account information: There is no profile picture, the username consists of incoherent numbers and letters, and if there are posts, they do not show people or come from image databases. Other indicators of fake followers are irrelevant and general comments and unusual interaction patterns.
According to Modash, a certain percentage of fake accounts among followers is normal, anything over 25% is a sign of fraud. Whether the stars bought the fakes on purpose or not is not clear. However, the fact is that the profiles of well-known personalities attract bots more than normal profiles. It is therefore also possible that the celebrities are confronted with the same scams as other users.
