On the evening of September 12, the Emmys were presented in Los Angeles for the 74th time. There were some winners at this year’s series awards – but also losers.
The award ceremony at the Emmys 2022 lasted a good three hours. The bottom line is that there is little that is surprising to report. Familiar faces and series that won awards at the Golden Globes in January, for example. There is no clear focus. On site, there was a lot of joy about the live event, which is slowly but surely returning to normal after several years of pandemic.
These are the 2022 Emmys winners
At this year’s Emmys, one series, as expected, won quite a large area. We are talking about “Succession”, a series from HBO that can be seen in Germany via Sky WOW. Winning in key major categories of Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Matthew Mcfayden), among others. Somewhat surprisingly, the two leading actors nominated, Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox, had to admit defeat to another candidate. Lee Jung-jae scooped the coveted award for his role in Squid Game. As expected, Jason Sudeiki won the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for “Ted Lasso” – the Apple series was again showered with awards in the comedy category and emerged as one of the big winners of the evening.
The award ceremony was also very successful for the mini-series “The White Lotus”. The production took home a total of ten awards; three of them in the important main categories. As expected, Zendaya, whose black Valentino dress caused a stir on social media, once again picked up the Best Actress in a Drama Series award. It was much more surprising – and also more emotional – when Sheryl Lee Ralph received the award for best supporting actress in a comedy series for her role in “Abbott Elementary”. There was a standing ovation for her singing performance.
Also noteworthy: John Oliver won for his sketchy news program “Last Week Tonight” for the 7th time in a row. The perennial favorite “Saturday Night Live” can already look back on a winning streak of six Emmys in a row.
Also interesting: We expected that from the Emmys in advance
These are the 2022 Emmys losers
In addition to a lot of beaming faces, there were of course also a few disappointed ones. Netflix’ “Better Call Saul” was once again empty handed at the Emmys 2022. Despite the nominations collected over the 46th year, the series never really caught on. Streaming service Netflix is likely to be somewhat disappointed this year. Although “Squid Game” and “Ozark” were able to win some important prizes, they were once again clearly beaten by their big competitor HBO.
Despite the overturning ratings and reviews, “Abbott Elementary” was significantly less successful than expected. Highly regarded actress Quinta Bronson, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, was ultimately defeated by Jean Smart (“Hacks”).
Hulu should also be disappointed. The provider was nominated in many categories and was also quite successful with “The Dropout” and “Dopesick”. In the important categories in particular, Hulu had hoped for significantly more prizes than the two that were ultimately received.
The most important prizes this year
In general, the Emmys, like the Oscars, award titles as well as actors, screenplays and directors. A basic distinction is made between comedy, drama, miniseries, television film, variety show and reality. In addition to the Oscars, Grammys and Tonys, the Emmys are considered one of the great prizes in the entertainment industry.
Lots of ads and few surprises
Unfortunately, as already mentioned, the 2022 Emmys offered little that was unexpected. All in all, the favorites prevailed. For example, the audience favorite “Squid Game” had the chance to win for the first time as a non-English language drama. In the end it didn’t come to that. The same applies to the very successful “Abbott Elementary” in terms of ratings. Accents, such as “Lizzo’s Watch out for the Big Grrrls”, among other things, remained rare.
The acceptance speeches by the stars, which sometimes escalated into comedy, caused laughter. The somewhat surprising award winner Jennifer Coolidge (also known from “American Pie” and “Legally Blonde”) had to be complimented from the stage.
However, NBC’s self-promotion was a little sour for viewers who watched the award ceremony in front of their home television – i.e. most of them. The station traditionally broadcasts the Emmys and has repeatedly shown clips from its own productions. An interruption that was announced as funny turned out to be a car ad that seemed a bit out of place. Apparently, this prestigious award ceremony has to recover a bit after the Corona break.
