These eight favorite Finnish songs are translation hits

These familiar songs were originally performed by foreign artists.

The 1970s were the golden age of Finnish translation hits. Many decades-old hits are actually imports, for which new Finnish lyrics have been translated or adapted. We collected less than seven well-known hits whose original performers can be found abroad.

A grown woman

Paula Koivuniemi’s mega hit A grown woman (1982) is one of the most famous songs in Finland. However, the song is not originally a Finnish act. It has been rewritten and arranged by Kaisu Liuhala Esa Nieminen. The name of the original song is Madaletta Primavera and its presenter is Loretta Goggi.

I’m Finnish

Kari Tapion a blue and white hit I’m Finnish (1983) is also of Italian origin. The song is a version of an Italian hit written by Raul Reiman L’italiano, which means “Italian”. The original performer of the song is Salvatore “Toto” Cutugno.

A one-way ticket

Versioned by Vicky Rosti (1979), Nummisuutareiter (1980) and Markku Aro (1989), among others A one-way ticket is a translation song pop singer Neil Sedakan from a song published in 1959 One Way Ticket.

Mombasa

Taiska recorded the beloved song in 1975 Mombasa. The song is a Finnish translation of a song by the Italian Fabio Frizzi Ibo lelé. There were several translated songs in the fight. For example, his hits Hello, hello (1977) is a translation of a song by Mariska Veres from the Netherlands Take Me High.

Against the bridge of the sun

Katri Helena has made several translation hits. For example Against the bridge of the sun (1975) is a translation of the Italian song Under the Porte del Sole. The original song was released in 1973 and is performed by Gigliola Cinquetti. Cinquetti became known to all of Europe in the 60s after he won the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest.

Look What You Did

A song published by Ressu Redford in 1991 Look What You Did is originally written by the British musician Phil Collins. The song Collins performed is called Against All Odds.

To Röper

Pepe Willberg’s perennial favorite To Röper is a Finnish translation of, what else, than The Beatles’ hit song Penny Lane. The Finnish version has lyrics Juha “Watt” Vainio.
