There are 17,500 power boxes on Berlin’s sidewalks. The gray blocks have been beautified since 2009. BZ accompanied the Peter Witte Elementary School in Reinickendorf with the so-called power box styling.

Katja and Liya (both 11) carefully place a stencil with a dolphin on the blue-sprayed power box on Großkopfstrasse. You want to create an underwater world on the box. The different motifs are applied layer by layer with the help of street artist Alex (36).

“It’s fun because we can spray paint ourselves and come up with the motifs ourselves beforehand,” says Liya (11). Making the stencils takes the longest. She spent two days preparing it with her friend Katja. The electrical box styling itself is ready in an hour and a half.

Thanks to the project by Stromnetz Berlin and meredo eV, 8,000 boxes have been beautified over the past 14 years. 500 are added every year.

This year 44 schools are taking part in the styling. The winners in various categories will be announced in the spring.
