Elon Musk said Tuesday that Twitter could charge a “light” fee for commercial and political users. This and many other measures should enable the billionaire entrepreneur to grow revenues. That way, he wants to compete with rivals such as Meta’s Facebook.
“Twitter will always be free for casual users, but maybe a small cost for commercial/government users,” Musk said in a tweet. “Some income is better than none!” he added in another tweet.
Musk said last week that he planned to develop features to grow Twitter’s revenue. He would find new ways to monetize tweets that contain important information or go viral. In addition, he wants to scale down executive salaries to reduce costs at the social media platform company.
“niche”
Speaking at the annual Met Gala in New York on Monday, Musk said Twitter’s reach was just “niche” right now, and he wishes a much larger percentage of the country was on it.
In tweets that were subsequently deleted, Musk suggested changes to Twitter Blue’s premium subscription service, including lowering the price, banning advertising and giving an option to pay in the cryptocurrency dogecoin. The paid extra service will also add features such as an “undo tweet” button, bookmarks, and a reader mode.
After closing the deal last week to buy Twitter for $44 billion, Musk also said he wants to bet on a variety of new features that will be announced soon. In addition, he wants to beat the spam bots and increase trust in Twitter.
Finally, there has been a lot of talk about freedom of expression. Musk would like to increase it and thinks Twitter should moderate less. After this statement, a lot started to move on Twitter and right-wing figures such as Ted Cruz and Boris Johnson gained many followers. After that, Musk reported that Twitter should above all be “politically neutral”.
