A poignant photo of protesters using slingshots and other homemade weapons in a confrontation with security forces in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, is one of six photos nominated for the World Press Photo of the Year 2022† Special: in order not to endanger his safety, the name of the photographer will not be disclosed. In the 65-year history of World Press Photo, the winner was only anonymous once, in 1973. Only a month after the death of Chilean photographer Orlando Lagos, in February 2007, was it announced that he was the photographer of the iconic photo by Chilean President Salvador Allende, shortly before he committed suicide.
