These are the most popular and funniest cat names of 2023

The list of the most popular cat names is known. The name Luna is right at number one. Last year, North Hollanders mainly opted for the well-known names that are already in the top ten. Yet Amsterdammer Jurre Geluk has given his cat a very special name.

The cat owners from the province are according to pet insurer Figo not very original: there are only three newcomers on the list. Those are the names Mia, Bella and Mimi. The Lion King is still a great source of inspiration, with Simba and Nala in second and third place.

Badr Harig

In addition to beautiful, fun names, there is also a list of the funniest names. The owners were original in this regard. Street language, food and puns in particular were a source of inspiration for them. You may not be able to imagine how an owner comes up with it, but the three funniest cat names are: Badr Harig, Dushi and Niffo.

Cigarette(ie)

The Amsterdam Jurre Geluk also has a cat with a special name, namely ‘Peuk’ (or Peukie). The presenter says that he picked up the animal from a litter at a breeding farm, where it was first given the name Blue Diamond Waterfall (which is also not an average name). “My ex and I thought it was a pretty exceptional name, but apparently he should have a name that started with the letter B.”

However, Jurre didn’t care about that and decided to name the cat Peuk(ie). “When we told that to the breeding farm, they couldn’t really laugh about it,” he laughs. The reason behind his name? “I was still smoking at the time and it also looked like a cigarette.”

Cremation

The Amsterdammer has now stopped smoking, but the name does not evoke any seductive feelings in him. “The cigarette butt doesn’t feel like a cigarette, it just feels like my cat’s name. The other day I thought, if he dies and we’re going to cremate him, we’ll light him like a cigarette.”

Jurre purchased Peuk with his then boyfriend, but when they broke up they decided that the cat would be better off with the presenter. “I gave a certificate to my current boyfriend, who has now become part parent of Peuk, which was partly devised for him for tactical reasons. Now he also feels responsibility for the animal.”

Jurre has a tip for future cat owners: “If you want an original name, take it with a grain of salt when you make a choice. It’s not a child, it’s a cat.”
