The Labor Department of the Generalitat has set this Thursday the minimum services for the cleaning and garbage collection strike called in Barcelona from Sunday April 24 and until Friday April 29. The impact on citizens that these stoppages can cause has led Treball to differentiate between collection services in special areas and by type of waste. As for street cleaning – which also includes emptying litter bins – two alternate cleaning days are guaranteed in the five days that the strike may last. At the moment the negotiations between companies and workers continue, although so far there has been no significant progress and the parties are headed for strikes.
Treball has dictated that in centers that are particularly sensitive to hygiene issues, such as health centers, nursing homes, schools, municipal markets and other supply areas, the management companies must guarantee an ordinary collection service.
As far as garbage organic -brown container-, especially sensitive to putrefaction over time, the protest must be compatible with its collection every 48 hours. The one in the gray container -popularly known as ‘rebuig‘- must be removed every 72 hours after the last collection. Selective collection, that is, the glass -green container-, the paper -blue container- and the plastic -yellow container- will be withdrawn in 50% of its usual service.
For other types of waste, the minimum services are less guaranteed. The collection of “bulky waste”, that is, what is popularly known as ‘the days of junk’, its collection is only guaranteed in the event that the objects or furniture impede the passage of pedestrians or road traffic.
