The basis for the ranking is the so -called Ease of Settling in Index, which deals specifically with the social and cultural integration of expats. Three central factors were assessed: the cultural openness and welcome culture, the general friendliness of the local population and the lightness to establish social contacts in the new environment. Over 12,500 people living abroad have evaluated their experiences in 53 cities worldwide.
