2014, 2018, 2021 – again and again brazen and armed robberies occurred in the capital. And they ended up with long prison sentences. Here is an overview.
KaDeWe raid
On December 20, 2014, five masked men attacked the KaDeWe am Tauentzien in the morning. They stormed into the posh department store to loot the luxury watch store there. While some of the gang kept security staff, customers and vendors at bay, others smashed through the safety glass display cases with hammers and axes. The robbery was over in just 79 seconds. They stole Rolex watches and Chopard necklaces worth 817,000 euros.
Suspects were caught – some of them belong to extended criminal Arab families. The trial ended with long prison terms and suspended sentences, and one suspect was acquitted.
Money transporter at the Alex
On October 19, 2018, a money transporter near the Alex was attacked. The perpetrators braked the car, wedged it with two vehicles and forced the security staff to stop.
Five masked men armed with Kalashnikovs threatened the money messengers and pried open the van’s rear doors with hydraulic spreaders. They had previously stolen them from the fire department.
On the escape with the cars, they lost parts of the loot worth millions, shot at police officers, caused accidents and had to leave a car behind.
Three suspects were later arrested, two of them sentenced to several years in prison and the third acquitted.
Garbage Man Raid
On February 19, 2021, four robbers disguised as garbage collectors attacked a money transporter on Kudamm.
They threatened the employees of the security company with a stun gun and sprayed them with tear gas. The booty: almost 650,000 euros.
Only one person involved has been arrested so far. He is a member of the notorious Remmo clan. Muhamed Remmo, nephew of clan boss Issa Remmo, was sentenced to seven years in prison.
