Quentin Tarantino was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday (October 27) and was asked which films he thinks are unapologetically awesome. Kimmel asked this question because Tarantino, in his book Cinema Speculations, last described the 1974 film Texas Chainsaw Massacre as one of the few perfect Hollywood films.

Incidentally, on the same episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Tarantino also answered a question about whether Kanye West gave him the idea for Django Unchained – the rapper had nothing to do with the film.

When asked about perfect movies, the Pulp Fiction director initially responded that there wouldn’t be many, and he believes that’s because: “When you talk about perfect movies, you first talk about individual preferences of each person in terms of aesthetics, but even trying to include all aesthetics…perfect films more or less cater to all aesthetic characteristics.”

Tarantino went on to explain that while not everyone might agree with his list, one should accept that everyone has their own favorite films. “There’s nothing you can say about any of these movies from [der Liste] bring,” he added. So he named the films that were perfect for him: “Jaws” (1975, Jaws), “The Exorcist” (1973, The Exorcist), “Annie Hall” (1977, The Town Neurotic), “Young Frankenstein” (1974, Frankenstein Junior), Back To The Future (1985), The Wild Bunch (1969). He also said of the latter that while it’s technically not a perfect film, it’s still unique.

Here is an overview of the entire interview and its list:

  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
  • Jaws (1975)
  • The Exorcist (1973)
  • Annie Hall (1977)
  • Young Frankenstein (1974)
  • Back To The Future (1985)
  • The Wild Bunch (1969)
