It’s good news for 11,800 high school students. From this school year, the examinations for the middle school leaving certificate (MSA) will no longer apply in the tenth grade. The Senate plans to pass the corresponding law on Tuesday.

So far, the following applies: At integrated secondary schools (ISS), community schools and grammar schools, uniform examinations in the subjects German, mathematics and the first foreign language as well as a presentation examination are held in the tenth grade.

The problem for high school students so far: While they were already preparing for the upper school, they had to accept a lower level of performance at the same time.

The grades in the report now determine the transition to the 11th grade and the MSA. If there is too much demand in an upper school, the sum of the yearly grades in German, first foreign language and mathematics decides on admission.

Also new in the law: school committees can also hold their meetings as video conferences. This involves specialist conferences on specific subject teaching, school conferences and joint parent representation on general issues such as the redesign of the playground.
