There is already Easter stress at BER

And at the newly opened Terminal 2, the baggage system broke down. Some passengers even missed their flight.

Pannen-BER has once again lived up to its name…

On the last day of school before the Easter holidays, many families flew on vacation. 70,000 passengers were expected at BER on Friday. The waiting times were long, especially in the mornings, and some passengers even missed their flights!

Terminal 2 was opened in good time before Easter. But in the night to Friday this brought additional burden instead of relief. There were technical difficulties here until 6 a.m. – the baggage conveyor system broke down.

The first morning departures had to be moved to Terminal 1. “Many Ryanair passengers missed their flight because they didn’t know they were flying from another terminal,” said a BER employee to the BZ A bitter start to the Easter holidays!

They were lucky enough not to fly until midday: Daniela (41) and Hannes Pippig (41) with their children Elida (8) and Tede (6): “We’re flying to Iceland. I think we’ll get through quickly. We are well prepared and have planned a lot of time” (Photo: Ralf Lutter)

Another problem: At the security check, passengers had to wait up to 40 minutes in the morning hours. “Normally you’re through after ten minutes,” says an employee at the security check for the BZ. But yesterday alone between 6 and 8 a.m., 40 flights took off.

Julia (28) and Maxi (32) from Neukölln had to wait three quarters of an hour with their baby at the luggage drop-off! “We have to leave quickly now, our plane is about to take off,” they said before they left for Sardinia. Next time they want to try the new machines where you can check in yourself.

BER spokesman Jan-Peter Haack draws a positive balance despite the breakdowns: “We have created more space in Terminal 1 and set up additional self-service check-in machines.” On busy days, the airport also uses additional service staff. This was already necessary in March, when 12,500 planes with 1.3 million passengers took off and landed at the airport.

The so-called BER team also coordinated passengers on Friday. “The partners at the airport adjusted and expanded their personnel planning for the Easter holidays,” Haack continues. Around one million passengers are expected at BER during the two-week Easter holidays. That’s almost as many as in a month. There are new glitches programmed…
