Theo Zwarthoed from goalkeeper to painter: “My best memories are with AZ”

Former AZ and FC Volendam goalkeeper Theo Zwarthoed is now a painter. Both North Holland teams will play against each other tomorrow afternoon in Alkmaar. With Zwarthoed we look ahead to the North Holland football get-together.

“I expect AZ to win. They are obliged to do so if you look at selection and budget,” says Zwarthoed. If NH asks the former footballer to choose between FC Volendam and AZ, he chooses the Alkmaarders. “I had a great period there. The group was great. We then grew from a gray mouse to a European Cup semi-final. That does something to you.”

Zwarthoed’s career

Zwarthoed started playing football at RKAV Volendam. In the 2000-2001 season he was under contract with the first team of Volendam, but he did not make his debut. That did happen at AZ: in 2002 he made his debut in professional football for the Alkmaarders. He would eventually stay at AZ until 2008.

After his first period in Volendam, Zwarthoed played two more periods in the fishing village: from 2009 to 2012 and the 2014-2015 season. They were a lot more successful.
