Theo (18) survived bus disaster in Egypt, but lost his grandmother Lucia (74): “Everywhere I looked, I saw people on fire. It was worse than horror” | Abroad

“Everyone on the bus was screaming and everywhere I looked I saw people on fire. Ten seconds after I got out, the bus exploded.” Theo Mathy is back home in Sint-Stevens-Woluwe, three days after the tourist bus he was in was driven off the track in Egypt. He and five relatives survived the disaster, his grandmother Lucia Devillé died. Here he tells his story for the first time: “Every year 7,000 people die on this road. So they know it’s dangerous, so why aren’t they doing anything about it?”
