Then in: the central butcher of Albert Heijn was once in Zoetermeer

Supermarket chain Albert Heijn has existed for so long that it is impossible to imagine the Dutch shopping streets without it. Did you know that AH’s central butcher shop was once located in Zoetermeer?

Albert Heijn was founded in 1887. In 1960 a central butcher shop was started in Amsterdam. This supplied to the various branches. In the following years, several large butchers were added, including in Rijswijk, Zaandam and Eindhoven.

New Central Butcher Shop in Zoetermeer

In 1986 something changed behind the scenes of the Albert Heijn supermarkets. A new central butcher’s shop was established in Zoetermeer. Construction started in the autumn of 1985 and the building was officially opened on September 6, 1986. Gerrit Jan Heijn (top man at AH / grandson of Albert Heijn) and Frits Ahlqvist (AH director) were among those present at the opening. The new central butcher’s shop would process about 120 tons of meat per week and employ approximately 90 people. Butcher shops in Rijswijk and Maarssen were closed after the establishment of the central butcher shop in Zoetermeer. Later, the central butcher shop in Zaandam was also sold.

70 Edison Street

The central butcher’s shop was located on the business park at Edisonstraat 70. If we look online, we see that a butcher’s shop is still located here today. Now it concerns the company JF Luiten Vleeswaren BV This is a traditional butcher shop, founded in 1930 by Theo Luiten in The Hague. The company has been based in Zoetermeer since 1997.
