Theft and burglary wave at farm stalls: ‘There is nothing to get’

“It starts with breaking open a cash box to get cash out of it,” says Judith Katerberg. “And there has also been someone in the night who broke open the door.” In a wooden chalet there are two cooling units with meat products and there is a milk tap. Cabbage and carrots are in wooden boxes. Footage from the security camera shows a man with a crowbar deftly opening the devices in search of money. It mainly caused a lot of havoc. Katerberg: “You see that the door is broken, the machines are broken. It is contactless payment, so there is nothing to get yet. Then you can clean up and repair things again. It’s a shame.”

The police have received several reports in recent months. “We call on victims to report the crime,” said police spokesman Matthijs van Houten. He also recommends hanging up a camera. “That can have a preventive effect. In addition, the images can ensure that we have enough leads to conduct research.”

The Katerberg family’s money box is now firmly glued to the table. A large padlock should prevent you from opening it easily. Judith Katerberg plans to continue with the sale. “The meat is all in the vending machine, so they can’t get to it. They can only take the individual products with them.” She has a message for the thieves. “Just go and earn your money with honest work. And if you’re in need, ask for help.”
