The young Montalbano 2the plot of the second episode

The Riviera hotel is destroyed by fire and this time too – as already happened some time before – the commissioner (Michele Riondino) reluctantly finds himself on the scene of the crime. As the flames spread, Salvo tries to save a trapped customer. Unfortunately, the man is unable to save himself, but for Montalbano it is the beginning of a new case to investigate.

It turns out, in fact, that the fire that destroyed the hotel is of an arson nature. Previously the owner Aurelio Ciulla (Antonio Alveario) had activated the insurance, a factor that would suggest his involvement in the fire. Instead, it turns out that he is totally unrelated to the facts. Therefore, the young Montalbano must direct his investigations elsewhere.

He begins to investigate the hotel guests, delves into the private lives of some of them, until his path crosses with that of Saverio Custunaci (Nicola Rignanese). On paper, he’s a real estate agent, but he’s recently made a career as an underworld broker. The last relevant assignment saw him intervene to quell the spirits of the Cuffaro and Sinagra families, two rival clans.

Who started the fire?

The commissioner suspects that they are somehow connected with whoever started the fire, but the certainty comes some time later, when a Cuffaro man is killed. It clearly emerges that the mediation work carried out by Custunaci has not borne fruit. In the meantime, Salvo continues to carefully analyze every detail that could lead him to the resolution of the case. And it focuses on the hotel guests.

His suspicion is that the real target of the fire was one of the guests of the facility. To attract his attention, then, room number 2. According to Ciulla, that room was empty on the evening of the disaster. Nonetheless, a witness claims to have heard noises immediately after the flames flared up.

Custunaci provides his version of events. That evening Ciulla moved him to a different room than usual, because room 2 was already occupied, without providing further details. Who lies and who tells the truth? And what mystery is hidden behind the flames? Montalbano discovers that during the fire, a woman fled from the hotel in a white car. Who is it about? The culprit is only revealed at the end of the episode, when the commissioner’s room becomes the scene of a three-way confrontation.

The young Montalbano 2Salvo and Livia grappling with the wedding

In addition to the investigations by the Vigata police station, Salvo continues the relationship with Livia (Sarah Felberbaum). They are madly in love and they finally decide to get married. Before taking the big step, they spent some time apart, shuttling between the Sicilian town and Boccadasse.

In Season 1, they got to know each other. Salvo rounded off the corners and from a grumpy and intractable he turned into a malleable man. Furthermore, he understood that to have a stable and healthy relationship, it is necessary to know how to divide private life from professional life. Livia, in turn, accepted her companion’s devotion to her work and waited.

A wait that paid off. The proposal came at the end of the previous episode, a moment after getting on the coach for the airport. Not exactly the most romantic proposal in the world, but in line with the character of Montalbano.

Now they have to start the preparations, but it doesn’t take much for Salvo to get overwhelmed by work commitments and this will have a negative impact on their relationship. In this episode, in fact, Livia begins to get fed up with her partner’s constant commitments and it is only the beginning of the very long back and forth that will see them live up and down for several years.
