A smartphone in everyone’s hands. But which one is the most popular? A market research company took a close look at worldwide sales and created a ranking of the best-selling smartphones. Only two manufacturers are represented in the top 10, one clearly dominates. TECHBOOK shows all placements.
Which smartphones will be sold the most in 2022? The answer to this question is clear: iPhones. As the analysts at Counterpoint Research, a US market research company, show that mobile phones with the operating system iOS accounted for the highest share of all smartphone sales worldwide. In addition to the clearly dominant manufacturer Apple, only one other has made it into the top 10 – Samsung.

iPhone 13 by far the best-selling device
As can be seen from the listing, the iPhone 13 was by far the world’s best-selling smartphone of the past year. According to the publication, the model accounted for around 28 percent of global smartphone purchases, mostly in China, the US, the UK, Germany and France. The sales figures have been at a consistently high level since the device was launched. But the fact that it became cheaper around a year later – with the release of the successor model in September 2022 – obviously made it even more attractive. Second place is taken by the iPhone 13 Max, which is only sold half as often.
Counterpoint Research emphasizes that in the sales year under review, the Pro Max variant of an iPhone was purchased more frequently than the basic model for the first time. The iPhone 14 Pro Max was the best-selling smartphone worldwide in September 2022 (third place in the ranking), while the iPhone 14 was relatively far behind in seventh place. Its faster processor may have been the decisive factor for this, while the 14 basic variant otherwise did not bring any significant advantages over the previous model.

The best-selling Samsung device was sometimes available for 129 euros
A Samsung device took fourth place in the ranking. And not one from the higher-priced and technically upgraded Galaxy S series, but the cheaper Galaxy A13. This was available in Germany last September for around 129 euros at a discount store. Another Samsung entry-level model, the Galaxy A03, made it to tenth place – by the way, the cheapest device in the entire ranking. With two devices in the top 10, Samsung is twice as represented in the current list as it was in 2021.
Old iPhone still more popular than many (new) Android devices
The oldest smartphone in this year’s ranking was the iPhone 12, incidentally the best-selling smartphone in 2021, and is still very far ahead in sixth place. On the other hand, the Android devices from e.g. B. Google and Xiaomi did not even make it into the top 10.
