The Swiss Le Gruyère AOP surchoix has been chosen as the world’s best cheese, which was announced for the competition by cheese manufacturers Vorderfultigen and Gourmino. The cheeses were ranked at the World Cheese Awards in Newport, Wales. 4434 cheeses from 42 different countries participated in the competition, and the jury included experts from all over the world.

The jury described the winning cheese as a refined hand-made cheese that melts on the tongue and has herbal, fruity and leathery notes. Cheese has a lot of both aroma and taste.

Gruyère is a hard Swiss cheese with a slightly crumbly texture. It is made from cow’s milk. AOP in the name of the cheese indicates the origin. Gruyère with the label is authentic and made according to tradition.

Gruyères are particularly good on a cheese platter to be enjoyed on their own or, for example, with crunchy crackers. Gruyère also belongs in cheese fondue and goes well with other warm dishes.

Bronze medal for Finnish cheese

Finnish cheese expertise was also seen in the competition. Juustoportti participated in the competition with its Vuohen Grand Reserve cheese, the model of which is gruyère. The cheese was judged worthy of bronze in the competition. The medal was not Juustoporti’s first. At the 2018 World Cheese Awards competition, the Brandy nut and the Winegrower of the Year received gold medals.

– We make specifically Swiss-type cheeses, and our cheese masters have received training from Swiss cheese masters. Yes, it feels good that our cheeses have received recognition in the world, states the manager of Juustoporti Niklas Keski-Kasari.

The Italian blue cheese, Gorgonzola Dolce DOP produced by De’Mag, was chosen as the second best cheese in the world in the competition.
