The World Padel Tour case to the European Commission: ‘Abusive and exploitative monopoly regime’

The accusation comes from the president of Fip Carraro and from the gamers: “The WPT has kept the players under its grip for years”

The Fip (International Padel Federation) and the Players Association have brought the World Padel Tour case before the European Commission. “It highlights in the clearest terms the abusive and exploitative monopoly regime of the WPT”, said the president of the FIP, Luigi Carraro. The Fip and the players association (Ppa) have turned to the European Commission because according to them the World Padel Tour violates article 101, that is, it prevents, limits and distorts the competition of European law and article 102, that is, abuse of position dominant.

Monopoly

“This legal action before the European Commission by the Federation and the Professional Players Association (Ppa) is unprecedented. It highlights in the clearest terms the abusive and exploitative monopoly regime of the WPT, which has held players under its grip for years, insulting professional athletes and stifling the global growth of this sport, ”says Carraro. These are the words of Ale Galan, president of the PPA. “The fact that professional padel players have brought this case up to the European Commission is simply to defend their freedom to play padel. For years under the WPT and detached from the Federation, pro players were treated as assets, not athletes, with many players barely covering their costs. The players will take any action to defend their livelihoods and to develop a better future for the padel ”. The Fip has launched its Padel Official Tour with the big names who intend to participate.
